I think it may be that we have to do like Infantry warriors are told when artillery support is inbound:  We have to get small.  I don’t have a problem with big churches in and of themselves, but there are some things common to them that are problematic.  I am in a congragation that is just about too small for politics.  I really like that.  In Jesus’s time, the way it seems in my studying is that there was one small synagogue in each village that was a center of learning, benevolence, fellowship and even court if it came to it.  I know each person in my little congregation.  I know their children and where they live.  I know if they are sick and I even work with some of them every day, and I’m not even the Pastor.  I hold no leadership role at all.  Another place where I read in my Holy Bible it says that Christians met often times in people homes.  One of my favorite experiences as a Christian was when I lived in the Arabic nation of Bahrain.  There was one Christian church there sancioned by the king to accomodate the many expatriots living there who were Christian.  You couldn’t turn around without hitting a Mosque, but there was this one church – that is, if you didn’t count the myriad places where Christians met in homes to worship, fellowship, and learn.  No politics, no real-estate squabbles, no doctrines or church covenants or by-laws, just Christ and Him crucified. 

Some say we have to be relevant to the world to draw the world in.  I say a coffee shop and a sound stage do not constitute relevance.  I have no problem with having some sort of venue that is given to purely Christian events – but maybe that is not a church.  Churches need to get small.

I believe the first reason things are getting like they are is simply because God said it would.  We have the prophecies in our Holy Bible that tell us that.  Aside from that, I have to use a quote i heard once that was attributed to a South Korean preacher who toured churches here in North America, “It is amazing what the Americans are able to do – without God.” 

Leaders in the Church and everywhere else are making mistakes, but let’s not be too quick to judge them only.  I never put myself up to be any sort of Christian leader – I sort of thought that was Jeasus’s job.  However, there was a time that I was courted to be a deacon at my congregation.  I refused it because I knew that I was unworthy of the position.  People thought I was being falsely humble, but I knew that there was sin in my life that I was fighting.  It was significant enough that I knew it was not for me to be a deacon. 

One day, like I knew it would, my sin came to light in a very public way.  There was a backlash because there were these people who had decided in their own minds that I was some sort of “good Christian” man.  Sure, I worked and served in ways in my congregation, usually because no one else would step up.  Love your leaders.  Pray for them, but don’t put them on a higher pedestal than they deserve.  Don’t be quick to judge when they mess up.  They are flesh just like you and me.  A person who is fighting sin and losing sometimes is not a evil person, he is what has come to be known – as a Christian.

The world is going to expect us to be perfect like Christ.  It is encouraged in the Holy Bible (Matthew 5:48, among other places).  We should strive for that, but we should not trust each other to be able to do that all the time.

I will add another comment in a second to more completely answer and idea I have to help with the rest of the world’s  problems with Christianity.
